Wawel - about the height of a hill 228 metres in Krakow Tour, located on the left bank of the Vistula River. Hill Wawelskie is zrębu tektonicznego arising in Miocene (23-5 million years ago) and constructed of limestone górnojurajskich century oksfordzkiego (161-155 million years ago). Wapienie are strongly skrasowiałe and rife with caves (such as Dragon’s Den). Therefore, the hill could originally called wądół, wąwał, wąwel. In the Middle Ages, the word wąwel called the gorge, which the two once shared a part of the hill. According to another theory, that means the word “wyniosłość among the marshes”, which was surrounded by hill.
On the hill there is a complex of historic buildings, from which the most important are:
Royal Castle
Cathedral of St.. Stanislaus Wenceslas
As part of the complex are also fortifications of Wawel Hill. Other relics were found buildings from different eras.
